Where should you start in healing your period problems?

Hey girl hey,

If you are here my guess is that you are struggling with some sort of period or hormone issue.

By now if you have ended up on my page more than likely you have tried most things your doctor has recommended for you and none of them have worked or given you the results you desire. Or you may be tired of being told everything is “fine” even though you know it’s not.

Whatever brought you here, I am glad you are here.

I remember being in Chiropractic school and one of my favorite professors told us this story of a patient he had when he was a doctor in South Africa. Everything on the patient checked out as “fine” but the patient was so persistent that he knew something was wrong. My professor turned him away reassuring him everything was fine. The patient showed up the next day pleading that he knew he wasn’t actually fine and was there anything else they could do. My professor ended up doing some extra tests that he wouldn’t have usually run and they had uncovered that the patient did have cancer. The lesson he shared with us as we sat in class listening to his story...trust your patient, if they say something is up then something is probably up because they know what it’s like to live in their body, not you. That has always stuck with me ever since that day. One huge question I ask my patients is “what do you think is wrong with you?”

Even if your answer is I don’t know, I just know it’s something rather than keep searching for answers.

Period issues are endocrine system issues. You aren’t having bad PMS, fibroids, depression, etc because you aren’t taking a birth control pill or because your body hates you.

You are experiencing symptoms because somewhere in your body’s well detailed plan of how to take care of you something is messing that process up.

Luckily, we know there is an order in which your endocrine system can become disrupted and it is an order in which we heal it. Here is a birds eye view of that cascade of events.

Step 1 Stabilize your blood sugar. Un balanced blood sugar is a huge stressor to our body and stress wrecks havoc on your endocrine system. One way to stabilize your blood sugar is eat about every 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Step 2 Support your adrenal glands. You have two adrenal glands, each one sits on top of one of your kidneys and their job is to manage short bursts of stress. The issue is it’s 2021 and who has short bursts of stress? Most of us are living in a chronic state of stress which will impede our adrenals from working properly and will tire them out, commonly known as adrenal fatigue. There are important hormones produced in your adrenal glands so with them being fatigued those processes can be inhibited...which will lead to causing more endocrine issues down the line. One thing you can do to help support your adrenals is get adequate amounts of sleep.

Step 3  Make sure that your detox organs are doing their job. The main way we get estrogen out of our body is by binding it with other by products and pooping it out. If we aren’t excreting estrogen out of our body then that can be one way we create estrogen dominance issues. There are several key players in our detox round : liver, large intestine, lymphatic system, and skin. One thing you can do to help your organs detox is drink filtered water and consume enough fiber.

Remember this is a cascade effect so if you were trying to just support your organs of detoxification but were not managing your blood sugar you will not quite heal the way you are looking for. Mismanaged blood sugar is a stress that affects your adrenal glands so those two processes would still be messed up.

If you are reading this and want one take away that you can start today to help with your period problems, start by managing your blood sugar. Eat every 2.5-3.5 hours during your day and pick foods that will not cause sudden spikes and drops in your blood sugar such as something with protein, healthy fat, and a complex carbohydrate.

As always if you are unsure where to start and looking for more guidance you can schedule a free discovery call to see what's recommended to get you started on your healing journey.

With love, intention, and happy periods,

Madalyn
